City-center limitation, partly resolved August 14, 2026: The city center's designation could not be reliably determined from the state's own FHSZ dataset in our earlier research; the dataset returned conflicting results at multiple checked center points (both "Very High" and "NonWildland"). We now know why: the published LRA layer contains overlapping polygons, so a single point can sit inside both a Very High polygon and a NonWildland one, and which result a query returns depends on the order they come back in. That is a property of the source data, not an error in either reading. Resolving the overlap in favour of the more hazardous tier and measuring against the city boundary, Very High covers 27.6 of Simi Valley's 42.4 square miles. What this does not settle is any individual address. If you live in or near the Simi Valley city center, use the Ventura County Fire Department's own address-lookup tool rather than relying on this page for your tier.
