Zone 0 Compliant Fencing in Altadena

Altadena sits in a Local Responsibility Area (LRA), and its official fire-hazard designation is not uniform: under the State Fire Marshal's March 2025 maps, hazard tiers step down from High near the Angeles National Forest edge to Moderate below, with much of the central and southern residential grid carrying no designated tier at all; even though large parts of that grid burned in the January 2025 Eaton Fire. As of August 20, 2026, checking your specific parcel on the official CAL FIRE viewer is the only accurate way to know your zone.

Point checks against the State Fire Marshal's 2025 LRA layer (checked July 26, 2026):

  • •Northern foothill (Chaney Trail area) = High
  • •Upper Lake Ave area = Moderate
  • •Central and southern grid = no designated tier ("NonWildland")
  • •Eastern Altadena (Eaton Canyon side) was not sampled; do not generalize the tier to that area.

Update, August 14, 2026: The point checks above returned no Very High result, and read on their own they suggest Altadena has none. It does. Measured across the whole community rather than at sampled points, clipping the State Fire Marshal's layers to Altadena's Census boundary returns 1.82 of 8.50 square miles as Very High under the LRA layer, and a further 0.90 square miles as Very High under the SRA layer. The point sample missed both, which is what a point sample can do.

SRA/LRA: Predominantly LRA, but not exclusively. Every point we sampled returned from the LRA layer, and this page previously described the community as LRA on that basis. Measured against the boundary, about 10.6% of Altadena falls in the State Responsibility Area layer instead.

Local ordinance status

LA County unincorporated adopted Ordinance No. 2025-0027 (Title 32 §4902.1), effective August 21, 2025, per county records, integrating the 2025 state maps.
